When I was a lad of only 17, I spent a lot of my free time working towards towards my Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award. This included hiking expeditions in South Wales carring rucksacks, tents, food and cooking equipment. During one such hike, a terratorial army member of the team, Darren Howard, introduced us to a way of rapidly descending the hillside in sort of leaping manner using our arms to maintain balance. He called this an army term "yomping".
The Wikipedia definition:
"Yomp is Royal Marines slang describing a long distance march carrying full kit"
The art of the Yomp
Many years later, I found that leaping down the hill during hikes whilst flinging arms up to maintain balance, is a much more efficient and stable than normal walking. I call this "yomping", though perhaps this is a modern invention of the traditional army yomp.
Anyway, we've decided to yomp around the world, and we find it especially fun when people join in!
PS. thanks to Steve Wilson for introducing me to the band who's song I've used as the background music.
