Before setting off on our 2,000kms journey from El Calafate to Bariloche we visited the Perito Moreno Glacier. It was awesome. Our first sighting was from the road approaching and from quite a distance. It was the first photo I took and has probably turned out to be the most impressive as it captures the entire scene and the enormity of the glacier starting from the top of two mountains, snaking down through the valley ending in the lake. It was impressive.

Up close I was amazed at the life that came from it. It was constantly cracking and thundering. You could hear sections of ice crack off in the middle of the glacier and crash into the lake beneath it. The sound echoed through the valley. The chunks of ice that would break off the face of the glacier would create an incredible slap as it hit the water, followed by waves splashing into the side of the glacier. The sounds were addictive, and only because the sun went down did we part ourselves from the live icey creature.

Just befote we left we were lucky to see a large chunk of ice slide down the face of the glacier only to be swallowed whole by the lake. This 50 metre, by 5 metres maybe, slice of ice just disappeared into the water. The only remnants were the waves and the small chunks of ice littering the lake. It really just vanished. Only a short while earlier we had noticed how this very slice of ice looked similar to a finger and thunb, with a priest in between the two. It was exhilerating watching it crash into the lake, but at the same time I couldn’t help feeling a little sad that the glacier had changed forever. The cycle of life.
